As an educational initiative of Staford School, the students of classes III to VIII visited an automobile garage cum service centre on 12th and 14th of October. The purpose of the visit was to make the students understand the working of a garage, the latest technology used in various sections such as division of labour, various sections of a garage such as the Reception, Customer Lounge, Billing Section, Washing and Service Area, Paint Booth, and Automated Wheel Alignment Section. The children also learnt about the processes involved in managing each of these sections and saw some of the innovations brought in the mechanism of servicing the automobiles. The students also learnt about the Japanese principle of ‘Five Ss’ laying importance on self-discipline, regularity, cleanliness, punctuality and hard work which can be applied by the students in their life. They also got acquainted with various components of the four wheelers, and their importance such as a spark plug, air filter, and engine. The children also learned about several car washing liquids used in cleaning and their compliance with the environmental pollution and safety measures.
The garage was well-maintained and equipped with the latest equipment such as the wheel balancing machine, electronic denting machine and injector cleaning machine, which attracted the attention of the young Stafordians the most. The students understood the application of the principles of science such as levers, simple machines, pulleys and hydraulic lifts and found out the simple dos and don’ts in maintenance and trouble shooting of minor snags in four wheelers.
The visit to the garage triggered the curiosity of the students and served as a medium to satisfy their queries. The children thanked all the employees by presenting them with a thank you card. Overall, it was an interesting and informative visit.
