The students of classes V to VIII were taken for an educational trip to a brick kiln on this Tuesday, with a purpose of making them understand the basic structure of a brick kiln and the method employed in making of the bricks. The students came to know about the internal labyrinth structure of a kiln which is used to bake the mud bricks at about 1000 degrees centigrade. The students were filled with curiosity and showered a volley of questions regarding the section of labour –employed—the unorganized sector through the contractors, the hazardous conditions when the kiln is heated, the type of fuel used, the methods used to minimize the air pollution, the types of bricks obtained after baking at different temperatures, the moulds used to design the branding on the bricks, the working hours and the ideal months when the kiln is functional.
It was a new learning experience for the students which helped them develop their social, critical analysis and emotional skills as they discussed about the safety of the labourers working in the kiln, the precautionary measures taken by the authorities to prevent any mishap, the concern about the environmental pollution, especially air pollution and indiscriminate use of soil as the raw material for the bricks. The trip helped the students understand the real meaning of the dignity of labour. It opened up a new world of learning and experience for the children.
