Any society that fails to harness the creativity and energy of its women is at a huge disadvantage in the modern world……Tian Wei CCTV News
The basis of Gender division in the society is based on the division of work between the men and women. Since the beginning, women have been engaged in work that are essential but are not economic productive such as cleaning, cooking, taking care of younger ones etc. On the other hand, men work in various fields and earn money and thus men are given more importance. Gender division emerges out of stereo type roles that exist in the society.
Among human foragers, males and females target different types of foods and share them with each other for a mutual or familial benefit.
In feminist economics, the institutional rules, norms and practices that govern the allocation of tasks between women and men and girls and boys also constitute the gender division of labour, which is seen as variable over time and space and constantly under negotiation. The most prevalent form is the division of paid and unpaid work between women and men in private and public life.
The basic idea behind the activity was to make the students conduct a survey in their home extended for a period of one week. They had to closely observe the schedule and time their mother and father spend in the household and outside work.
The students of Class 10 B enthusiastically conducted the survey and came out with structured observation. They also presented their survey and explained what they observed during their survey.
The activity focused on making the students aware of the prevalent gender division not in the society but in Indian households too. They clearly understood the difference and the efforts put in by their parents to keep the family running and also understood that both are equally important to each other. Astha Raj, Summaiya, Dhyanshi came out with some stunning observations and presented their views in the most balanced manner. Nawaz, Harshit and Fakhir too realized that it is not the gender-based stereotype that is important but the readiness to give your input in all kinds of responsibilities that matters…!!
It is not the gender division that gets the household chores running but the mutual understanding and the respect for each other’s work.
