Human mind is very powerful. However, it also requires regular exercise to keep it sharp. Mental Mathematics or the process of solving the questions of Mathematics without the help of pen and paper is one such exercise. So, on 10th August, 2015 a Mental Mathematics Quiz competition was held in Staford School to test the mental capabilities of the students of class IV to VIII.
There were four teams participating in the quiz and each team had five members from classes IV to VIII. In the first round, the participants were asked questions from topics like data handling, fractions, area and perimeter etc. The second round was a visual round and participants were asked questions based on graphs and other figures. Each team was given 15 seconds to answer the question, failing which the question was passed on to the next team. For every correct answer, the teams secured five points while two bonus points were allotted to the team answering the question passed to them, correctly.
All the participants were selected after a preliminary round. So, it was a very tough competition. In the end, Sapphire House emerged a clear winner with a big lead over other teams.
Emerald House stood second, with Garnet and Amber houses following close at the second and third places respectively.
Overall, it was a good experience for the students as they got familiar with a new aspect of Mathematics where they applied the concepts learnt in class without the use of pen and paper.
