Joys of spring
Staford Preschool, Chowk, seemed to have been drenched in hues of yellow on January 23, 2017 as students and teachers came dressed in vibrant shades of the bright colour to celebrate and welcome the Spring Season (Vasant).
Teachers narrated stories associated to the birthday of Goddess Saraswati and the festival of Basant Panchami to the tiny tots, who listened in rapt attention. They were even told the importance of praying to the Goddess of knowledge. As a mark of paying obeisance to the goddess, children were also made to offer yellow flowers.
As the day is considered auspicious and is meant for learning and gaining knowledge, a colouring and writing activity was also held on the occasion, wherein children were given line drawings of yellow objects — sun, mango, lemon, banana, bee, sunflower, giraffe etc to colour. They were made to write alphabets and numbers also with a yellow crayon. Through this activity, they not only learnt to recognise yellow colour, but also memorised several yellow coloured fruits, vegetables, insects, animals and other objects around them.
Under the guidance of teachers, the little children also made a number of craft items. While the junior and senior play group kids made honey bees and sun respectively, the nursery and kindergarten students were seen showing the magic of their little fingers as they made birds and flowers out of pastel paper sheets. This craft activity aimed at encouraging and refining fine motor skills in children.
The day witnessed a distinctive sight of yellow colour — flowers, balloons, streamers and attires that symbolically represented the augmentation of Vasant Panchami. Not only this, children also had a ‘yellow treat’ as they ate yellow coloured delicacies. Mango bite candies were also distributed to the kids.
