A fraction (from Latin word ‘fractus’ means “broken”) represents a part of a whole, or more generally, any number of equal parts. Fraction has been into existence from the Egyptian era which is known to be one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Fractions are not regarded as numbers. In fact, they are used to compare the whole number with one another.
ACTIVITY: A hands-on activity was organized for grade 3 students based on fractions. In this activity, students represented different fractions showing pizza divided into different segments. They represented the concept of fractions using paper plates. Little Stafordians beautifully brought out the concept of fractions through innovative ideas. Students seemed enthusiastic while doing this activity.
OUTCOME: Fraction is a necessary concept that is taught to students at a younger age. After doing this activity students will be able to co-relate the concept of fractions with objects around them.
