For Indians it is a matter of pride that the United Nations has declared June 21 as International Yoga Day. Staford School decided to use this opportunity to conduct a week long yoga session in the early morning hours, during the assembly, for the teachers and students attending school. With the summer at its peak and the school working only for classes 6 to 8, this group was lucky to practice yoga every day for an entire week, thereby getting a glimpse into a holistic approach to health and well-being.
The Yoga week was well started by the Principal Mam who introduced the first asana to the students and highlighted the importance of yoga in the development of both the body and the mind. The yogasanas increase the concentration power of the children which is the need of the hour today, especially for the students.
The sessions were attended enthusiastically by the students. These yoga sessions were conducted by the sports instructor of the school who not only demonstrated asanas like tadasana, anulom-vilom, gardua asana, vriksha-asana, ardha-chakrasana, kapaalbhati, but also elucidated the benefits of each asana. The Yoga Week concluded with the demonstration of all the asanas learnt throughout the week.
It was a wonderful experience for the students and the teachers who not only overcame their inhibitions regarding exercise but also pledged to practice yoga daily.
